Julie Edsforth has nearly 20 years of leadership and direct-service experience in the nonprofit community, as executive director, social worker, counselor, board member, consultant, philanthropist and community volunteer. She is the former executive director and one of three founders of Powerful Voices, a Seattle-based nonprofit organization that fosters adolescent girls’ development by providing programs and promoting social justice so girls can realize their dreams, engage their communities and shape a better world. Prior to her work in the nonprofit sector, Julie spent time in the high tech industry where she gained business skills that she carefully brings into her nonprofit work. She is a graduate of Whitman College and has a Masters in Social Work from University of Washington.
While Julie enjoys working with nonprofits of all shapes and sizes, she has a particular fondness for working with grassroots community-based organizations – strongly believing in the vital role they play in addressing both the consequences and root causes of some of society’s most challenging issues. Julie’s approach is values-based, grounded in her commitment to building an equitable and just world and to the power of working in partnership with diverse groups of individuals to bring about progressive social change. She has a deep appreciation for learning and growing through both success and failure, and has seen this play out for herself as well as others as they serve their community. Her experience on all sides of the nonprofit equation enables her to relate firsthand to the challenges and rewards that go with the territory of surviving and thriving in a complex nonprofit landscape.
